NEW 10/6/25 – Michigan Recycling Coalition – October News – Prioritize Battery Safety!
From cell phones to power tools and even electric toothbrushes, the invention of lithium-ion batteries has transformed the way we power our world. While their high energy density, lightweight design, and rechargeability make them a versatile component of many electronics, they’re highly reactive and can easily cause a fiery explosion when compromised.
In fact, the National Waste and Recycling Association estimates that each year, over 5,000 fires occur at recycling centers, with many linked to the improper disposal of lithium-ion batteries. Putting lithium-ion-powered products in your trash or recycling cart can lead to fires that contaminate recycling and put workers at risk. So, what should you do instead?
